Process and inspiration of Aliyaa’s collection:

As designers, we have been taught at university to start any new project with research. Therefore, I started researching and looked into the trends of Spring Summer 2018. I did some design development based on the fashion forecast, and since I have a keen interest in history and have studied about ancient civilizations in my fashion design program at AUE, I imagined a connection between the historical character of Penelope and my designs. I created an original story inspired by her featuring the character, Nadiah, who is strong and determined as well as highly intelligent, symbolizing the woman of today.

Aliya’s experience in developing her first collection:

The process of developing the collection has contributed immensely to my growth as a fashion designer. Though I researched and conceptualized the collection during my course at Instituto Marangoni in Milan, it was in Dubai that I received creative feedback from my instructors at AUE which helped me in fine-tuning the designs to create something unique. I conducted all my fabric sourcing locally and am creating all the outfits in the well-equipped Fashion lab in the safe environment of my university which has provided me all the needed support. I am thoroughly enjoying and learning during the process – creating patterns, cutting fabrics, constructing and testing for fit.

How did the Lavazza design competition influence her:

Being the winner of the Lavazza Design Competition has been a dream come true for me as it has made me a confident person with belief in myself. The competition has opened several doors for me and the company has provided me support in every area. I have gained exposure in Italy, the home of fashion, and experienced unlimited creativity there. The course at Instituto Marangoni has added value to my skills and knowledge, and I have taken it as a challenge to prove myself to the world through my work. I would like everyone to recognize and appreciate Aliyaa from American University in the Emirates who is taking her first steps towards having her own place in the world of fashion.
