AT THE AGE OF 24, HUBERT DE GIVENCHY CREATED HIS OWN HAUTE COUTURE HOUSE THANKS TO THE FINANCIAL SUPPORT OF LOUIS FONTAINE (OWNER OF PRISUNIC’S RETAIL EMPIRE). ITS ADDRESS WAS 8 RUE ALFRED DE VIGNY, PARIS.

BORN ON FEBRUARY 20TH, 1927, IN BEAUVAIS, HUBERT JAMES TAFFIN DE GIVENCHY, WAS, AT A VERY EARLY AGE, INSPIRED BY FASHION MAGAZINES AND DREAMED OF WORKING AT BALENCIAGA. AT THE AGE OF 17, HUBERT DE GIVENCHY STARTED AT JACQUES FATH AS STUDIO DESIGN ASSISTANT – UPON THE RECOMMENDATIONS OF A FAMILY FRIEND.

IN 1946, THANKS TO FAMOUS ILLUSTRATOR CHRISTIAN BÉRARD, HUBERT DE GIVENCHY MOVED TO ROBERT PIGUET AS DESIGNER. THEN CHRISTIAN DIOR RECOMMENDED HIM TO LUCIEN LELONG (DIOR’S IDEA WAS TO HIRE GIVENCHY AT HIS OWN HOUSE THAT WOULD OPEN THE FOLLOWING YEAR).

AFTER SIX MONTHS AT LELONG WHERE GIVENCHY PERFECTED HIS TECHNICAL SKILLS, ILLUSTRATOR RENÉ GRUAU HELPED HIM START AT ELSA SCHIAPARELLI. HE BECAME HER VERY FIRST ASSISTANT. HE WAS THEN PROMOTED TO CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF THE FLAGSHIP STORE LOCATED ON PLACE VENDÔME, MAKING IT THE FIRST COUTURE READY-TO-WEAR SHOP OF A HAUTE COUTURE HOUSE.
AFTER 4 YEARS OF COLLABORATION, HUBERT DE GIVENCHY LEFT SCHIAPARELLI TO CREATE HIS OWN HOUSE.
THE PRESS RAVED ABOUT GIVENCHY. FOR THE NEW YORK TIMES, ‘A STAR IS BORN’, WHILST THE FIGARO WROTE ‘HUBERT DE GIVENCHY BECOMES “L’ENFANT TERRIBLE” OF THE FASHION WORLD OVERNIGHT WITH HIS FIRST COLLECTION’.
